Iconic 100ft Devon attraction returns with incredible views

The English Riviera Wheel is making a welcome return to Torquay this week. This year marks the 11th appearance of the iconic summer attraction in the Bay.

The wheel, at 100 feet tall, provides passengers with a bird’s eye view of the English Riviera. From its location in Princess Gardens, the wheel provides views of Torquay Harbour and the wider coastline. The owners of the wheel, the Mellor Group, have also pledged a £20,000 donation to Torbay Council to fund improvements to the local area, including Princess Gardens and the War Memorial.

Cllr Jacqueline Thomas, Cabinet Member for Tourism, Culture & Events and Corporate Services at Torbay Council, said: “We are delighted to have the wheel back in the Bay as the main tourist season gets underway. The wheel offers a magical experience for all ages and has become an iconic part of Torquay's seafront which is loved and enjoyed by many."

James Mellors, Director at Mellors Group, added: “We're excited to announce that the English Riviera Wheel will be reopening this May - perfectly timed for the bank holiday and, fingers crossed, some warmer weather. Over the years it’s been great to see the continued development of the stunning gardens. This year, beyond our usual ground rent we are proud to contribute a substantial donation towards the conservation of the footpath and paving. We can't wait for the return of residents and visitors to the English Riviera Wheel, ready to soak up the sunshine and create family memories once again.”

Last month it was feared the big wheel may not return after planners recommended an application to erect it in the usual place be refused. They said the harm it did to the heritage assets around its base next to the Princess Theatre had begun to outweigh the advantages of having it there. Torbay Council's planning committee, however, decided to go against their officers' recommendation and approved the application.

The English Riviera Wheel opens on Friday, May 24, and will be open daily from 10am until 10pm Monday through to Saturday, and 10am until 8pm on Sundays.
