A police investigation has been launched after a woman was "dragged to the floor" during a robbery in South Tyneside.

The robbery is said to have happened in February when a man approached two women on Laygate in South Shields. After asking for a cigarette, the man grabbed the handbag of one of the women, before stealing a small amount of cash and other items.

A police investigation was later launched and officers have today released an image of a man they would like to trace. It is believed that he was in the area at the time of the incident and could have information which assists the investigation.

A statement from Northumbria Police said: "At around 12.30am on Thursday, February 22, it was reported that a male approached two women walking on Laygate in South Shields. The man asked one of the women for a cigarette before grabbing the strap of her handbag when she refused.

"He then dragged her to the floor before fleeing the area on foot with the handbag which contained sentimental items and a small amount of cash. The victim was not injured but was left shaken by the incident, which was later reported to police."

A number of inquiries have been ongoing since the report was made to identify those involved. The man, or anyone who knows him, is asked to contact Northumbria Police using the ‘Report’ page on their website or by calling 101, quoting crime reference 021126F/24.
