In pictures: Inside the overcrowded northern Syrian prison where thousands of Isis suspects are kept

New images from inside a Syrian prison show thousands of Isis suspects crammed into cells as they await their fate following the death of their leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

The photos from the Kurdish run Hasakeh jail in the northeastern part of the country were taken on Saturday on the same day the Isis chief was killed in a US-led operation.

US President Donald Trump said Baghdadi ran into a dead-end tunnel and set off an explosive vest, killing himself and three of his young children after specialist forces surrounded him.

AFP was allowed access to the jail in Hasakeh that holds 5,000 inmates from a number of countries, including Syria, Iraq, Britain, France and Germany.

Images showed men, who have been accused of atrocities including rape and mass executions, packed into small cells.

Aseel Mathan, 22, from Wales, who is accused of being part of the terror group said he wanted to go back to the UK.

He said: 'I want to leave the prison and go back home to my family.’

Mathan joined his now-deceased brother in Mosul five years ago when he was 17.

Around a third of prisoners in the Hasakeh jail have serious illnesses, including AIDS, but only 300 can access the medical ward each night.

Children are also being kept in the prison.

Tens of thousands of fighters and other members of the group are held in detention centres across northern Syria and in Iraq.

In Syria, the centres are controlled by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, which spearheaded the fight against IS in eastern Syria.
