IndieWire’s Veronica Flores and Vincent Perella Win Southern California Journalism Award for Best Use of Social Media

After receiving a record nine nominations this year at the 2024 Southern California Journalism Awards, it was announced last night at an awards dinner gala at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles that IndieWire’s Senior Social Media Manager, Veronica Flores, and Senior Social and Cultural Editor, Vincent Perella, had won Best Use of Social Media to Enhance and/or Cover a Story by a Group for their work on “How Barbie Became Real.” Judges for the category commented, “Well put together, clean editing, snappy and just right for social media. Great job!”

In addition to this win, IndieWire’s Deputy TV Editor and TV Critic Ben Travers, who won an award last year for Criticism of TV, received third place in the same category for a number of his reviews, including his piece, “‘I Think You Should Leave’ Season 3 Is the Song of the Summer.”

IndieWire’s Features Writer, Crafts & Special Projects, Jim Hemphill, along with VP, Features Strategy, Chris O’Falt, and video producer, Trevor Wallace, were also recognized as first runners-up in the category of Entertainment Reporting for their collective work on “Deep Dive: George & Tammy.” This team was also nominated in the category of Multimedia Package for “‘Risk Fuels Me’: Writer/Director Chloe Domont on Her Explosive ‘Fair Play’.”

Lastly, IndieWire’s Executive Editor, News, Tony Maglio, received third place in the category of Entertainment News – Film/Broadcast for his piece, “Nobody Thought to Update the ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’ Rights for the Streaming Age.”

Many other IndieWire staff members were nominated this year as well. Digital Director, Christian Blauvelt, a repeat nominee, was recognized in the category of Obituary/Appreciation — Film/TV Personalities for the story, “Ryan O’Neal Dead at 82: A Heartthrob Who Surrendered Himself Completely to Great Directors.” For his piece, “Mia Wasikowska Isn’t Returning to Hollywood Any Time Soon,” IndieWire’s Deputy Editor, Film, Ryan Lattanzio, was also nominated in the category of Personality Profile — Film/TV Personalities. After having won the award in 2022, IndieWire’s entire staff was also nominated again this year for Best Website, Traditional News Organization.

The Los Angeles Press Club, which was founded over a 120 years ago with the mission to “support, promote, and defend quality journalism in Southern California,” has been hosting the Southern California Journalism Awards for the last 66 years. In addition to these awards, the L.A. Press Club also hosts the National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards and presents the Veritas Award each year to a film that brings to light “stories that reveal corruption or injustice or criminality and, sometimes, even human accomplishments and triumphs,” this year’s winner having been “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
