In Thor: Ragnarok, Chris Hemsworth's God of Thunder was given a haircut and Marvel fans lost their minds, so imagine the mild chaos there would have been if they'd changed his look once again for Avengers: Infinity War.

That could well have been the case if they'd signed off one particular piece of concept art by Rodney Fuentebella, who designed a radical change for Thor's appearance by giving him a ponytail and a cowl to match his cape.

Sharing his concept on Instagram, Fuentebella explained how he was going for a "wondering warrior" look.

"Here is a early concept illustration I did of Thor for Avengers Infinity War," he wrote. "I wanted to go for the wondering warrior look. Learned a lot in this project and had such a blast! Final look of Thor was done by @ryan_meinerding_art Enjoy!"

To be fair, he does look decisively more Nordic than the version that made into the film, but the cowl/scarf probably would have taken a few extra months to animate – particularly in that bit when he spins round and and then thumps the ground with his makeshift tree-axe.

Back in 2017, Hemsworth said that he felt liberated by his new haircut.

"When I didn't have the wig on, I instantly felt like I could move and speak and react differently," he told Entertainment Weekly at the time. "Once we aesthetically stripped a lot of that away, it allowed the whole thing to take on a different attitude.

"It felt like a completely different character, and that was hugely liberating and freeing as an actor because I had become a bit bored with myself."

Avengers 4 arrives in cinemas in the UK on April 26, 2019, and in the US on May 3, 2019. Avengers: Infinity War is out now on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download.
