Inquests open into the death of two teenage boys who died after getting into difficulty in River Tyne

Inquests have been opened into the deaths of two teenagers who died after getting into difficulty in the River Tyne.

David Ionut Radut, 14, and Aras Rudzianskas, 13, both from Newcastle, were pulled away by the current while in the river near the the bridge at Ovingham, Northumberland, shortly after 3.30pm on Saturday, May 18.

David's body was found in the water, following a thorough search of the river. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Aras was rescued from the water and taken to hospital in a critical condition. He passed away three days later on Tuesday, May 21.

On Tuesday afternoon, the inquests into both of their deaths were opened at Northumberland Coroner's Court in Morpeth, Northumberland.

The court heard how David, who was born in Romania, was identified at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) by his uncle Daniel Marolicaru, 46, at around 9pm on May 18.

Assistant Coroner Paul Dunn said: "Investigations are continuing - police investigating in relation to the circumstances of David's death. The case will be adjourned until an inquest, which is to be considered in due course."

The coroner told the court that Aras was identified at the mortuary at the RVI. He said: "An investigation into the circumstances of Aras' death is continuing with the police investigation not quite complete.

"This inquest is now adjourned until a date to be fixed. Two investigations running alongside each other. That's in relation to Aras an the earlier inquest in relation to David."
