“Inside Out 2” Dethrones “Dune: Part Two” to Become Top Film of 2024 in Just 2 Weeks

Eight days out from its release, the 2024 Pixar movie had earned $355 million domestically

Inside Out 2 has surpassed Dune: Part Two at the box office in just two weeks — becoming the highest-grossing North American release of 2024, per Variety.

Eight days out from its release, the 2024 Pixar movie had earned $355 million domestically and $724 million worldwide, compared to Dune: Part Two's overall domestic earnings of $282 million and $711 million worldwide.

The family film had the second-biggest opening of all time for an animated movie, trailing behind the 2018 sequel Incredibles 2, which earned $182 million in the domestic market on its opening weekend.

Last year, Barbie grossed over $1.3 billion globally in ticket sales after one month and became Warner Bros.' highest-earning theatrical release of all time and the 53rd movie overall to gross more than $1 billion at the box office.

Frozen, Frozen II, the aforementioned Incredibles sequel, Minions, Toy Story 4 and The Super Mario Bros. Movie are among the animated movies that currently hold the achievement.

Inside Out 2 follows now-teenage Riley as she starts puberty and experiences four new emotions: Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment and Ennui.

According to the synopsis, Riley’s already existing emotions, Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust and Fear, “aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up” and they work to ensure that the new emotion doesn’t change the young girl's "sense of self."

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Tony Hale, who voices Fear, reflected on how the character Anxiety resonates with him.

"It's very easy to go to anxiety," Hale said. "It's very easy for me to live in the 'What if?' It takes work, which is really ironic because we're in the present. It takes work to be present!"
