Hidden within the grounds of Chester Zoo, you'll find a culinary treat that has enthused both gastronomes and wildlife enthusiasts.

Once a Victorian country mansion, The Oakfield has been masterfully revamped into one of the world's most respected gastropubs. First built in 1884, its fascinating history even includes acting as a hospital for Belgian casualties during the First World War.

However, it was George Mottershead, an innovative war veteran who transformed this aged edifice into the centerpiece of his pioneering concept a "zoo without bars" prioritising animal welfare above all.

What truly differentiates The Oakfield, however, are its previous tenants. Once home to regal lions, spirited chimpanzees and vibrant parrots and pelicans, this place houses a rich tapestry of experiences.

From being a family dwelling to serving as a quaint tea room and even an aquarium, the metamorphosis of The Oakfield over time is indeed exceptional, reports the Mirror.

Since welcoming guests in 2018, The Oakfield has been continuously celebrated with awards, ranging from local accolades like the Taste Cheshire Awards to global commendation in TripAdvisor's Travellers Choice Awards; it takes pride in being in the top 10 per cent of restaurants worldwide. Responding to immense demand, The Oakfield has now extended its opening times to include not just Fridays but Sunday evenings too.

Chloe Gill, the food and beverage operations manager, couldn't hide her excitement about the success of their Friday evening trial. She remarked: "Our Friday evening trial proved to be super popular. So, in response to the phenomenal demand we've had, and as we head into summer months and begin to enjoy lighter evenings, we're thrilled to extend our opening hours to include not just Fridays but Sunday evenings too."

The pub's sun garden has become a sanctuary for visitors, offering a unique backdrop of wildlife sounds while contributing to the zoo's conservation mission. Gill added: "Our guests can enjoy our sun garden while taking in the sights and sounds of nature, brimming with bird song and the majestic roars of lions in the distance - all while knowing every sip of their drink or bite of their food supports our charity, helping to create a brighter future where wildlife thrives."
