Inspectors note 'significant improvements' at Clyde Valley High in Wishaw

A Wishaw high school has received encouraging feedback from inspectors following a recent visit

Pupils, parents and staff at Clyde Valley High School welcomed the assessment provided by the school inspectors which highlighted “significant improvements”.

A follow-up letter to parents and carers highlighted positive changes in leadership and culture at the school situated in the town’s Castlehill Road.

The report praised head teacher Sandra Gilfillan for bringing in “a clear vision that everyone supports”.

In response Ms Gilfillan said: “We are delighted that Education Scotland has recognised the good progress the school has made, highlighting our culture of positivity and enthusiasm, and noting the sense of belonging and pride our young people feel in the school.

“Our improvements to the learning environment and high levels of commitment displayed by our staff have been key in bringing about improved outcomes for young people.

“In so many ways our young people have been the driving force behind these changes and we are very proud of their passion for learning and the leadership skills that they display.

“We look forward to developing further opportunities for our young people to grow and to reach their full potential.”

In March 2020, in their initial inspection, HM Inspectors highlighted key areas for improvement.

Now however they’ve found significant improvements at the school which has led to “the climate of trust and pride which is evident from staff and young people”.

In consultation with pupils, the head teacher and staff worked together to simplify plans to improve the school, focusing on two key areas: increased pupil attendance and developing classroom approaches to improve attainment.

The report also praised pupils at the school for their positive attitudes, politeness and good behaviour, saying: “Young people in the senior stages are taking on more leadership roles, for example, the pupil parliament, the sustainability group, learning ambassadors and the sports council.

“The head teacher now plans to extend pupil leadership opportunities to include even more young people.”

Councillor Michael McBride, Convener of North Lanarkshire’s Education, Children and Families Committee, also welcomed the report, saying: “It’s clear that Clyde Valley is on an upward and positive direction, which underscores the school’s commitment to transparency and continuous improvement.

“I would like to congratulate the entire school community on their achievements and look forward to following their progress with interest.”

Ms Gilfillan added: “I’d like to thank everyone at the school including pupils, parents/carers and staff for their support and dedication for everything we have achieved.”

The letter concluded: “We recognise that the school needs some more time to implement its priorities for improvement fully.

“We have asked North Lanarkshire Council to provide us with a report on the school’s attainment within 18 months from the publication of this letter.

“This report will inform any decision made by Education Scotland regarding further engagement.”
