Shop owner fed-up with cars rolling down from Co-op and smashing into her store

A fed-up interior designer has seen her shop front demolished four times by cars rolling down a slope from a Co-op supermarket car park.

Anita De-Vine’s store in Baildon, West Yorkshire, has been repeatedly damaged by vehicles after their handbrakes failed and they came hurtling down the road.

The most recent crash was earlier this month – which saw the Baildon Interiors’ shop window smashed in.

A “frustrated” De-Vine has warned it is "only a matter of time before someone is hurt" if Co-op does not do more to address the problem.

Co-op has added a sign encouraging people using the car park to apply their handbrake firmly.

But De-Vine has contacted the supermarket to get it to remove the three spaces, which sit directly at the top of the slope, in line with her shop front.

She said: "It is ridiculous to have parking at the top of the ramp which leads onto a busy road.

"I have raised the issue with the Co-op to get things amended in the car park so we can try to minimise the risk of cars coming down the ramp potentially injuring a pedestrian or motorist.

"I appreciate that the responsibility lies with the driver to apply their handbrake, but it keeps happening.

"There is quite an incline from the car park into the main road.”

Describing the most recent incident, De-Vine added: "It smashed all the glass front, furniture and ornaments that were there.”

De-Vine said it was the fourth time it had happened in the last 22 years, and it was “a serious accident waiting to happen”.

She said she hoped Co-op took notice before a pedestrian was possibly hit by one of the cars.

Bradford council has contacted the Baildon Co-op to discuss the situation.
