Inverclyde veterans to receive home care in new pilot programme

A new care package pilot for veterans will be launched in Inverclyde.

Erskine will launch the Support at Home initiative on Armed Forces Day on June 29, aimed at broadening care packages for veterans by bringing assistance directly to them in their own homes.

The help ranges from someone to talk to, help around the home, assistance with errands and shopping, escorted trips for activities, and help getting to appointments.

John Graham, 95, a Royal Navy Veteran, is one such participant.

He said: "I put my name down for the pilot because having someone pop in even just for a chat is something to look forward to. It’s even better if they can come with me for a coffee.

"I appreciate the help and company. It makes a big difference to my day, knowing there’s someone who cares and can assist with little things that might be challenging for me.

“The companionship is invaluable, especially for someone like me who has seen a lot in life and sometimes just needs someone to share stories with.

"I find it very helpful to have assistance with tasks that I find difficult, such as shopping or getting to appointments.

"This kind of support will help me maintain my independence and stay connected with the community."

Wing Commander Ian Cumming, chief executive officer of Erskine, said: "This initial pilot in Renfrewshire and Inverclyde, will help us project Erskine’s renowned support into Veterans’ own homes.

"We intend to complement existing care at home provision, but with our staff really having the time to help deliver meaningful, bespoke assistance which enhances each Veteran’s quality of life, dignity, and independence.

"If the pilot is a success, Erskine’s Board of Trustees will consider steps to upscale the service and deliver to Veterans across Scotland.

“Armed Forces Day is a significant occasion for us to launch this pilot, as it allows us to not only honour the sacrifices and contributions of our Veterans, but to actively improve their quality of life.

"Reaching, consulting and supporting the Veterans community is crucial for us serving those who have served our country, and ensuring we deliver on our motto: Futures for The Brave.”

The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty, or INF, which banned ground-based nuclear and conventional missiles with a range of 500-5,500 kilometers (310-3,410 miles), was regarded as an arms control landmark when Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and U.S. President Ronald Reagan signed it in 1988. Russian military says it captures eastern Ukraine village, Kyiv says fighting continues
MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russia's Defence Ministry said on Friday that its forces had taken control of the settlement of Rozdolivka in eastern Ukraine, but Ukraine's military said heavy fighting was raging in areas around the settlement. Belarus bolsters air defence forces along Ukrainian border
Belarus, an ally of Russia in the war with Ukraine, said earlier this week it had shot down a quadcopter that had illegally crossed the border from Ukraine "to collect information about the Belarusian border infrastructure".
