There has been chaos in the Dublin suburb of Blanchardstown, after Ireland’s first Krispy Kreme drive-thru proved massively more popular than anyone expected.

Doughnut lovers queued round the clock to snap up the sugary treats following last week’s opening, infuriating nearby residents with the resulting traffic congestion and noise from car horns being honked at all hours.

Following complaints from people living in neighbouring apartment complexes, the drive-thru is now only open from 6am until 11.30pm, instead of 24/7.

Anyone requiring a 1am doughnut fix will now need to park up and walk into the store to pick up the goods.

Krispy Kreme CEO Richard Cheshire in a statement: “We’ve listened to our neighbours and we’re making changes immediately.

“We anticipated a warm welcome for Krispy Kreme in Ireland and have long wanted to open a store here, but the response has been way ahead of our most optimistic expectations.

“For the most part too, our drive-thru has been a success. But we know that the late-night noise has been an upset for our neighbours.”

The wider response to the drive-thru’s overwhelming success has been one of surprise, disappointment and confusion, with one local person asking if they were selling “donuts glazed with crack”.

Local councillor Ted Leddy said that he too was shocked by the drive-thru’s unexpected impact.

“I have heard reports, I was at the opening and I have to say I wasn’t prepared for the phenomenon it is,” he told Independent.ie.

“I don’t think the management in charge of traffic control were prepared either.”
