A MAN woken up by police officers at home and who reacted by hurling vile insults and spitting at them, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates.

Jack Wade, of Hunnyhill, Newport, admitted resisting arrest and using threatening and abusive words and behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress, on May 31.

Police went to Wade's home address to arrest him, for an unrelated, alleged matter, that morning.

The 24-year-old's behaviour was volatile — swearing and being abusive, which led officers needing to restrain him, fearing he would assault one of them, said Lauren Stone, prosecuting, at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court.

As he struggled with his handcuffs on, Wade — with no previous convictions — spat at officers, which led them to apply a 'spit hood'.

Wade, outside his home, continued hurling vile insults.

When interviewed, Wade admitted he spat, but claimed it was not deliberate — explaining he was angry at being woken up by police at home.

For Wade, Oscar Vincent said his client had been to hospital with a suspected ankle fracture, and was discharged at 3am on strong painkillers.

Mr Vincent said, in mitigation, his pregnant partner was distressed and his dog was panicking, which "put the household in a chaotic state".

The court was also told Wade has ADHD.

Magistrates fined Wade £80, with £85 costs and a £32 surcharge.
