More than 1,100 people in Gaza and 1,200 people in Israel have been killed in the conflict that followed a weekend of violence, after Hamas militants attacked Israeli border towns and Israel carried out airstrikes in Gaza.

The city is currently under "total siege" as Israel attempts to target Hamas militants, following unprecedented attacks by the group on Israeli border towns that resulted in more than 100 people being taken hostage.

The United Nations warned that air strikes in Gaza had damaged sanitation and water supplies in the city, while Hamas said its mains electricity had run out after the city's only power station ran out of fuel.

More than 300,000 Israeli troops have massed at the border with Gaza, in what is expected to be a ground offensive in the city in an attempt to root out Hamas militants.
