Darrell Clarke admits Cheltenham Town's final day relegation at Stevenage will always haunt him.

Clarke has left the Robins to take over at Barnsley, who unveiled him on Thursday afternoon.

He was in charge of Cheltenham for 36 League One games, with the battle against relegation going to the wire, but a 2-1 defeat at Stevenage saw them fall two points short of the safety line.

“We knew where we were at Cheltenham with the circumstances, finances and resources," Clarke said.

"They are great people with a loyal upbeat fanbase. We nearly got there and that will always haunt me to be honest.

“To miss out by two points, it took me a week or two to get over it.

"I felt we deserved it, certainly the players did after not scoring for 11 games. But it wasn’t to be and you are forever learning as a leader.”

Clarke is now achieve a promotion to the Championship to add to his impressive CV.

"I had a great team at Cheltenham, but now it’s time for a new chapter in my career," he said.

“It’s a club that can get out of the division at the top end.

"I’ve brought a few clubs into League One and managed a few games but I’ve never had that real opportunity to get a time out of it."

Clarke's assistant head coach at Oakwell will be former Robins forward Martin Devaney.
