Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Liar's first series finale.

It's official: ITV is giving the autumn's biggest hit thriller Liar a second series, with both Joanne Froggatt and Ioan Gruffudd returning.

The big news was announced live on-air on ITV on Monday (October 16), seconds after a major twist in the quest to bring rapist Andrew Earlham (Ioan Gruffudd) to justice left viewers on the edge of their seats.

Writers Harry and Jack Williams said Monday night: "We always hoped this story would return for its final chapter, and we can't wait to be reunited with the brilliant Joanne and Ioan."

Liar has ranked as ITV's highest-rated new drama of the year likely because its constant curveballs have made it perfect fodder for fan theories and endless debate among the show's passionate audience.

Monday's finale appeared to be leading to Andrew once again slipping through the fingers of police, only for a last second twist to reveal that he'd actually be murdered as coppers sought to arrest him.

Any questions about the direction of the second series have been swiftly answered by ITV's head of drama, Polly Hill, who teased on Monday night: "Liar has gripped the nation over the last six weeks and we're delighted both Joanne and Ioan will return to play Laura and Andrew.

"Jack and Harry Williams are incredible storytellers and part two of Liar will have the audience equally gripped, as we find out who killed Andrew Earlham."

A continuation of Liar had been tipped by star Joanne Froggatt last week, when she revealed that it would be possible for writers Jack and Harry Williams to do "one more" run of episodes.

"I don't think it would be any more than that, but there is a possibility of doing a second season," she said at the time.

ITV says the series will go into production again in January 2019, so we'll be waiting awhile to see the Who Killed Andrew storyline actually play out on telly.
