Emmerdale's Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) and Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) are in a marital crisis in an upcoming special episode. The couple's relationship is on the rocks following Rhona's courtroom outburst that resulted in Gus Malcolms (Alan McKenna) being sentenced to eight years in prison, a decision she made without consulting Marlon.

In a heated confrontation, Marlon tells Rhona she's "not the woman he fell in love with". Discussing the special episode, Zoe revealed: "It is essentially an episode of two halves. The first one is the surface stuff, what you can plainly see going on, particularly dominated by Marlon and Rhona's now dysfunctional relationship and how real and ugly that currently is."

In the episode airing on Monday, the estranged couple meet for lunch in an attempt to mend fences. However, tensions flare up again when Rhona discloses that she has accepted Tom King's (James Chase) dinner invitation. In the subsequent episode, Rhona and Marlon join Tom and Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper), Mandy Dingle (Lisa Riley), Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt), Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick) and Suzy Merton (Martelle Edinborough) for a dinner party, reports OK!

The sight of other couples being affectionate only serves to highlight the struggles Marlon and Rhona are currently experiencing. According to Zoe: "That's tough, it's a stark reminder of how good they used to be together. And it's sickening to watch, isn't it? People in love and smooching near you when things are dire in your own relationship. In a way, how bad your marriage is feels magnified by everyone else's intimacy."

While trying to maintain civility, Marlon and Rhona reach their breaking point during Tom's toast to marriage. The couple engage in a heated argument and Rhona suggests that they should leave but Marlon refuses.

This leads to Rhona declaring their marriage over. But after two years of matrimony and everything they've been through, could this really be the end?

In addition, the dinner party episode will reveal the chilling reality of Belle's life with her abusive partner, Tom.

Mark mentioned: "Nobody has the slightest clue what Belle's going through," adding "There's this tension there all of the time and the audience will be wanting one of the couples to see it. It's right in front of them but they just don't. What you see public-facing doesn't always reflect what's going on behind closed doors."
