Love Island fans were quickly left with a complaint as the new series began while the big opener left them asking 'how' and why'. The 2024 run of the hit ITV dating show kicked off on Monday night (June 3) with a bunch of new singletons looking for love.

The Islanders were introduced to fans of the show in a special montage, where they were all shown doing their day jobs before being summoned by a glistening heart in the sky, stripping to their swimwear and entering the show's famous villa.

After they made their entrances, host Maya Jama arrived, dazzling in the Spanish sun in a white frock. She then revealed that the new contestants had been coupled up based on how they were ranked by fellow contestants in terms of relationship material.

She told the new islanders: "First impressions count. Boys and girls, I now want you to rate each other in order of who you think has come across the most like boyfriend and girlfriend material, right down to who has given the least relationship vibes."

She then revealed the rankings would mean who they were paired with. The couples were soon revealed to include: Mimii Ngulube, 24, a mental health nurse from Portsmouth, and Munveer Jabbal, 30, a recruitment manager from Surbiton; and Nicole Samuel, 24, an accounts manager from Aberdare, and Sean Stone, 24, a salesman from Hertford.

Other partners were: Samantha Kenny, 26, a make-up artist from Liverpool, and Sam Taylor, 23, a hairstylist from Chesterfield; Harriett Blackmore, 24, a dancer and personal shopper from Brighton, and Ciaran Davies, 21, a surveyor from Pencoed, South Wales; and Jess White, 25, a retail manager from Stockport, and semi-professional footballer Ronnie Vint, 27, from London.

Meanwhile, Ayo Odukoya, 25, a model from Canning Town, and Patsy Field, 29, an office administrator from Orpington, were also joined together. Later, former The Only Way is Essex star Joey Essex made an unexpected arrival as the show's first celebrity bombshell.

But it was the earlier montage that Love Island viewers were flocking to social media to discuss as they noticed the video segment was accompanied by a superhero theme, as well as Marvel music - and not everyone was impressed.

One said: "Marvel theme song with a bat signal inspired light is crazy work #LoveIsland." Another commented: "Realising it’s the bat symbol with Avengers music is hurting me as a Marvel fan #loveIsland." A third asked: "How are they doing a DC sign with a Marvel sound??? #loveIsland." A fourth added: "Not the marvel theme with the dc bat-signal #loveisland."

Meanwhile, the ad breaks also proved a point of contention as they quickly caused complaints among fans online. One complained: "17 mins in and we have ad breaks?! Another season, another set of disappointments #loveIsland." Another wrote: "ITV…..yall about to p*** me off with these ads! It feels like we just got here #loveisland."

A third shared: "Definitely did NOT miss these 50 min ad breaks #loveIsland." A fourth demanded: "Sorry but they need to cut out with all these ads feel like i’ve watched more ads than the actual show #loveIsland." Another noted: "I swear there’s like 2x the number of ads from previous seasons #loveisland." A sixth added: "Can they stop the unnecessary ads alreadyyyy #loveIsland."
