There's a general election on the horizon (July 4) and to help people decide on their vote, broadcasters are airing a number of TV debates involving leaders or senior representatives of several UK political parties.

British political leaders, including current prime minister and Conservative party leader Rishi Sunak plus leader of the opposition and Labour Party leader Keir Starmer, are signed up to debate on screen – where they'll present their policies and vision for the country.

ITV has announced upcoming dates for two TV debates so far, and we've shared all the need-to-know details to help you tune in on the night.

When is ITV's election debate on TV?

The first general election debate airs on Tuesday, June 4 at 9pm on ITV, where Conservative Party leader and current prime minister Rishi Sunak will face questions alongside Labour Party leader Keir Starmer, who is also leader of the opposition.

The debate is titled Sunak v Starmer: The ITV Debate and will broadcast on ITV1, streaming service ITVX, STV and STV Player.

This is the first of two TV debates set to broadcast on ITV, with a follow-up debate taking place on Thursday, June 13 at 8.30pm.

The ITV Election Debate 2024 will see "leaders or senior representatives" of the Conservative Party, Labour Party, Liberal Democrats, the SNP, Reform UK, the Green Party and Plaid Cymru participating in the 90-minute programme.

Sunak v Starmer: The ITV Debate

Conservative leader Rishi Sunak and Labour leader Keir Starmer will go head-to-head in the first TV debate, moderated by ITV presenter Julie Etchingham on Tuesday, June 4.

Etchingham previously moderated TV debates ahead of the 2015, 2017 and 2019 general elections.

The debate will last an hour, starting at 9pm, taking place live in front of a studio audience.

ITV have invited viewers to submit a question for the debate ahead of the broadcast. The closing date for entries is Monday, June 3 at 3pm.

The debate will be immediately followed by The ITV Election Interviews at 10.10pm, presented by ITV News' deputy political editor Anushka Asthana. The leaders of the Liberal Democrats, the SNP, Reform UK and the Green Party have been invited to take part in this programme.

In addition, an interview with the leader of Plaid Cymru will also air in Wales that evening.

The ITV Election Debate 2024

ITV will air a multi-party election debate in the week following the Sunak and Starmer debate, titled The ITV Election Debate 2024.

Julie Etchingham will return to moderate this debate on Thursday, June 13, which will feature the leaders or "senior representatives" of the following parties:

  • Conservative Party

  • Labour Party

  • Liberal Democrats

  • Scottish National Party (SNP)

  • Reform UK

  • Green Party

  • Plaid Cymru

This programme will air for 90 minutes from 8.30pm on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player. It will be followed by the ITV News at Ten.
