ITV's Julie Etchingham suffers Prince Charles blunder during live Election coverage

Julie Etchingham was forced into a swift apology on air after making a big blunder at a key moment in the Election coverage, which was quickly seized on by viewers watching at home.

Experienced broadcaster Julia who, just weeks ago hosted the pre-Election debate on ITV and has also been at the helm of events like the King's Coronation and his mother, The Queen's death, followed in the footsteps of her colleagues at ITV News and Good Morning Britain, by picking up the baton as Britain woke to the dawn of an new Labour era in Downing Street.

At 10pm on Thursday night, an exit poll forecast a win for Keir Starmer's party by a huge majority and that prediction was borne out by results across the constituencies, as Labour made significant gains and the Conservatives suffered catastrophic losses, including ex Prime Minister Liz Truss losing her seat in Norfolk.

Election coverage and reaction dominated proceedings on both BBC and ITV and it was Julie who was on air as new PM Starmer had his first meeting with reigning monarch King Charles III, with their conversation had very much in private, before Starmer and his wife were seen emerging from Buckingham Palace.

And it was something said by news anchor Julie as she commentated on the key moment that saw things go very wrong for her, when she remarked: "Being welcomed by The King's private secretary, Lady Victoria Starmer, alongside him. Welcomed in to go to see The Queen. To see The King, forgive me, to see The King to be invited to form a new government and what a moment that must be for him as he contemplates what lies ahead."

While Julia quickly corrected herself after the mistake, it didn't take long for social media to react, with one viewer taking to X to write: "Julie Etchingham’s just announced Kier Starmer’s going to see the Queen, and she doesn’t even have the excuse of having done the overnight coverage…"
