Ivan Sunjic on ‘wish list’ of Champions League club after Birmingham City exit

Ivan Sunjic is being eyed by Dinamo Zagreb following his Birmingham City departure. Croatian midfielder Sunjic was one of five senior players Blues released last month, along with Neil Etheridge, Marc Roberts, Gary Gardner and Scott Hogan.

The 27-year-old made 40 appearances across all competitions, including 33 starts, in a turbulent final season with Blues. Sunjic was instrumental at the beginning of the campaign as part of a double-pivot in midfield with Krystian Bielik before losing form and favour following the sacking of John Eustace.

Gary Rowett used Sunjic in the final weeks of the season and he scored in the 3-0 win over Coventry City at St Andrew’s but the chances of him taking his Blues career into a sixth season always seemed slim.

Having joined Blues for a club-record £6million in the summer of 2019, Sunjic is now available on a free transfer. Germanijak claims Dinamo want to re-sign Sunjic this summer.

Sunjic started his career with Dinamo and developed in their B team before becoming a fixture in their first team in 2018. If Sunjic does return to Zagreb, he could have the chance to play Champions League football next season.

Dinamo won the Croatian top flight by eight points last season and will go through the Champions League qualification process again. They were defeated over two legs by AEK Athens in the third qualifying round last year.
