Ivanka Trump attends musical about welcoming international travellers with Canadian prime minister

While her father was away defending his controversial travel ban, Ivanka Trump attended a musical that celebrates openness to foreign travellers with Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau.

President Trump‘s daughter accompanied Trudeau, and 120 ambassadors from around the world, to the performance of ‘Come From Away’ in New York City.

The musical is set in a small town in the Canadian island of Newfoundland, where residents sheltered thousands of foreign travellers who were diverted when the U.S. shut down airspace following the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.

Introducing the play, Trudeau, who has welcomed 40,000 Syrian refugees, spoke to the audience about the relationship between the U.S. and Canada and the importance of friendship.

‘There is no relationship quite like the friendship between Canada and the United States. The deep ties … of business, of friends, of culture, of people travelling back and forth, families of all these connections. This story, this amazing show is very much about that. And it’s about friendship as well,’ he said.

The first daughter went to see the play while Donald Trump held a rally in Nashville during which he attacked a US court in Hawaii for halting what he called a ‘watered-down version’ of his travel ban, which saw him drop Iraq from his list of banned countries allowed to enter the US.

His revised ban would also not apply to travellers who already hold visas.

The president told his supporters he would fight the decision in the Supreme Court if necessary.

‘We’re going to win. We’re going to keep our citizens safe. The danger is clear. The law is clear. The need for my executive order is clear,’ he said.

But back on Broadway, the show received a standing ovation, including from Ms Trump, who was sat near Trudeau.

Following the performance, the prime minister was asked about whether he spoke with Ivanka, and told CBC, ‘Oh she enjoyed it. As did everyone in the theatre.’
