Contact has been made between Max Wober and Leeds United ahead of their critical summer decision, but, for now, it’s all eyes on Austria duty. The defender suffered the misfortune of scoring the decisive own goal in his country’s 1-0 loss to France on Monday night.

After the worst possible start with his nation at Euro 2024, Wober will now refocus on forthcoming games with Poland and Netherlands. In the meantime, Daniel Farke and Leeds are awaiting Austria’s exit before making firmer decisions on where Wober’s future lies.

“At the moment, there is currently total radio silence on both sides,” Wober told Bild. “I’ve heard from Leeds there will be talks once the European Championships are over. They want me to concentrate on Austria for now.”

Farke has already held talks with Brenden Aaronson, another Leeds loanee who spent last season in Germany, and struck an agreement they will work together next season. Wober was with Borussia Monchengladbach last term and reports in Germany suggest they would be keen to retain Wober next season.

However, with no loan clause active and a long contract in place at Elland Road, Leeds will dictate what Wober’s fate is. The 26-year-old has said his goodbyes to the Gladbach camp and heard nothing since.

“In Gladbach, I said goodbye to everyone and thanked them for the great year,” he said. “I haven’t heard anything else from them yet.”

Austria are generally rated as 66/1 outsiders to win this summer’s tournament outright and would do well to reach the quarter-finals, but lifting that trophy remains Wober’s dream. He was asked by Bild what the ideal outcome of this summer would be for him.

He said: “My ideal scenario would be to become European champion with Austria and then go on holiday for two or three weeks.”
