Jacob Crompton: Body found in river during search for missing Retford teenager

Nottinghamshire Police says a body has been recovered during the search for a teenager who went missing more than a month ago. Jacob Crompton, 19, from Retford, was reported missing on Sunday, March 24.

Jacob had been on a night out in Retford town centre but failed to return home. Jacob's father had been personally taking to a kayak with a friend on most weekends to traverse the River Idle, close to where Jacob was last seen.

Posters featuring pictures of Jacob have been put up across Retford, including in shops, bus stops and the town's leisure centre. Jacob's parents, Mark and Nicola, recently issued a statement saying that they were "shattered and bewildered" by their son's disappearance.

A statement was issued by the police at 5pm today (Sunday, April 28), 35 days after Jacob went missing. A spokesperson for the force said a body was found in the River Idle, north of Retford, on Saturday morning (April 27).

Whilst formal identification has yet to take place, Jacob’s family has been informed of the development, the police said. Detective Chief Inspector Gemma Scott, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Jacob’s family have been informed of this very sad development and our thoughts are with them at what I know will be an extremely difficult time.

“I would like to thank all those members of the public for sharing our appeal, and for the support and assistance they have given to our officers on the ground. Although our searches have concluded, officers are continuing to work to establish the full circumstances surrounding Jacob’s disappearance. A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Friends and family gathered to pray for the safety of Jacob Crompton on Wednesday, April 24 - one month after his disappearance. Friends, family and colleagues were invited to a church service to show support for the young man's family and join in with a silent prayer.
