  • Jaguar Land Rover is recalling 2128 SUVs for potential engines fires that can be caused be oil leaks.

  • The leaks occur because the wrong type of plastic was used for the oil filter housing, causing it to crack.

  • Several 2024 models are affected: the Defender, Discovery, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar, and F-Pace.

Jaguar Land Rover is recalling roughly 2100 SUVs due to oil leaks that can potentially start engine fires and create dangerous conditions for other drivers. Several models from the two brands are affected, including the Jaguar F-Pace along with five Land Rovers: the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar, Discovery, and Defender.

The recall only applies to units from the 2024 model year. In total, 1995 Land Rovers are included in the recall, which breaks down into 910 Defenders, 235 Discovery SUVs, 303 Range Rovers, 500 Range Rover Sports, and 47 Range Rover Velars. Plus, 133 Jaguar F-Paces are compromised.

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from the oil-filter housing, which was apparently produced using the incorrect specification for the type of plastic. This means that over time the plastic will crack, eventually leading to oil leaking into the engine bay. The oil can potentially end up dripping onto hot engine components, which can cause a fire. The NHSTA documents also note that the oil can leak onto the road, creating a hazard for others drivers, particularly people driving two-wheeled vehicles.

Jaguar Land Rover already has a fix ready, and the affected Jaguar and Land Rover SUVs will have their oil-filter housing—including the filter and associated o-rings—replaced. The work will be done for free, covered by Jaguar Land Rover's warranty program. According to the NHTSA documents, Jaguar Land Rover plans to notify owners of affected vehicles on August 9. Owners can also check the NHTSA recalls website to see if their vehicle is affected.
