Jake Gyllenhaal's training for Road House hit a little too close to home.

On Monday's episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the 43-year-old actor described what it was like costarring with MMA fighter Conor McGregor on the movie, which is a remake of the 1989 film of the same name starring Patrick Swayze.

"By mistake, he clocked me in the face," Gyllenhaal said of McGregor, 35, going on to explain, "We would do a take [of] fake fighting, and then we'd go watch the monitors to see it back, to see what worked."

"He was always great with me," the actor added in his conversation with host Jimmy Fallon. "He would tell me to do things like, 'Oh, you know, turn your hand, move a little bit more this way to try to make it look more real.' "

The face-clocking incident came about while filming one of said fight scenes around 3 in the morning, when McGregor "was talking to me really close," Gyllenhaal said.

"And he was like, 'Yeah, that left hook looks good, but then when you do it, boom!' And he hit me by mistake," he added, laughing.

The snafus ended up going both ways, though. "But I, by mistake, then slammed his face with a car door. Like, legit," Gyllenhaal admitted. "And he was like, [not bothered]."

In Road House, Gyllenhaal plays a former UFC fighter who becomes a bar bouncer at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys following the end of his fighting career. Aside from McGregor, he appears alongside Jessica Williams, Post Malone, Daniela Melchior, Lukas Gage, Billy Magnussen and Darren Barnet.

During Road House's premiere at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, on March 8, Gyllenhaal told PEOPLE that training for his role as Elwood Dalton "took a village" to make possible.

"I'll tell you that being where I am — 10 years ago I made Southpaw, which is another fight movie, and I was in a different place," he explained. "My body was, I knew that I needed help with nutrition and I knew I needed to keep myself safe from injury and I needed to also be able to have the aesthetics of the whole role."

"So balancing all that took a group of people helping me all the time," Gyllenhaal said.

Road House is streaming on Prime Video Thursday.
