Jake Gyllenhaal takes us to the 'End of the Road' with musical monologue to kick off “SNL” season 49 finale

"It’s been 49 years, over 900 shows / Costumes and wigs and a room full of blow."

Deep down, Jake Gyllenhaal is still Mr. Music.

The Road House star gave his biceps a break and instead flexed his vocal chops for his latest hosting stint on Saturday Night Live. Gyllenhaal had the honor of closing out season 49, and marked the occasion with an epic rendition of the 1992 Boyz II Men classic “End of the Road.”

“You know, you can’t get to 50 without a little bit of 49, and we’re here at the finale… the end of the road,” Gyllenhaal said before breaking into song, with SNL cast members Ego Nwodim, Kenan Thompson, Devon Walker, and Punkie Johnson joining him soon after.

In true SNL fashion, Gyllenhaal switched up the ballad's lyrics for the sake of laughter, revealing that he was the very last choice to host the finale after a bunch of other famous people said no. "I guess they're all holding out for the 50th, but not me, not little JG,” he sang. “I'm the one who said yeah."

Running down the list of of too-busy celebs, Gyllenhaal crooned, “They asked Pedro Pascal, but he wasn’t around / Zendaya said no because she’d be out of town /Even asked [Ryan] Gosling to come back again — just hosted three shows ago.”

Accompanied by his backup, Gyllenhaal continued, “We’ve come to the end of the road / It’s the last episode / It’s time to say goodbye to season 49 / You’ll be 50 soon.”

Breaking things down with a spoken-word interjection, Gyllenhaal added, “And even though this is the end of one season, I like to think it’s also the start of a new one. In many ways, this is the real first episode of season 50.”

But Nwodim shut him down: “Nope. No, it’s not.”

“Had to try,” he said, before singing the next verse: “It’s been 49 years, over 900 shows / Costumes and wigs and a room full of blow / So many stars have walked out that door / So here’s to 49 more.”

The season finale marks Gyllenhaal’s third time hosting SNL, after he led the show in 2007 and 2022. Earlier in his monologue, Gyllenhaal tried to boast the significance of his latest episode, doing his best to ignore the milestone season just around the corner.

"When you think of historic television seasons, the first number that pops into your head is 49,” Gyllenhaal said. “I mean, sure, you know, one more episode and I would have been hosting the premiere of the 50th season. But who cares?"
