Saudi Arabia is preparing to admit that missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed in a botched interrogation, according to reports.

The Saudi Arabian government will say Mr Khashoggi died in an interrogation which was intended to end with his abduction from Turkey, CNN reported.

The admission will come in a leaked report which is attributed to two anonymous sources, the US news network said in its report on Monday.

One of the sources said the report “could change” and is “still being prepared”.

The other source told the news channel it will likely conclude the operation was carried out without government clearance.

Donald Trump told reporters he was aware of the report but did not know if it was correct. He said the US is working with Saudi Arabia and Turkey to figure out what happened.

It comes after it was reported by a Turkish newspaper that Mr Khashoggi may have recorded his own interrogation, torture and killing on his Apple watch.

The developments also emerged after Saudi Arabia dismissed accusations Mr Khashoggi was murdered by a hit squad inside the country’s consulate in Istanbul as “lies”.

Interior minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif condemned the "lies and baseless allegations" on Saturday.

He said the kingdom "is committed to its principles, rules and traditions and is in compliance with international laws and conventions", according to the official Saudi Press Agency.

Mr Khashoggi wrote for The Washington Post opinion pages. He was last seen entering the Saudi consulate on October 2.
