Warning – Avengers: Infinity War spoilers coming right up....

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 poses some problems for Avengers: Infinity War and its upcoming, untitled sequel. It's billed as the ending of a trilogy, but currently nearly all the team is dead, right?

This pretty much proves that they will come back to life in Avengers 4, but to combat this assumption, interested parties including Star-Lord actor Chris Pratt and Infinity War co-director Joe Russo have been trying to convince us that the Phase Four movie could be set before the two-part Avengers film.

But when Guardians 3 director James Gunn was asked about when his movie was set, he didn't try to hide anything.

"It will be after," he said.

This makes sense, as it would be very strange (and not very dramatic) to set one of the first films in the MCU's Phase Four before the climax of Phase Three. We know the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 lineup survives unchanged to the beginning of Infinity War, so the stakes would feel much lower.

The only surviving Guardians member at the end of Infinity War is Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) – unless you want to count their frenemy Nebula (Karen Gillan) too. So the majority of the cast is bound to be back before Avengers 4 wraps (as pretty much confirmed by Drax actor Dave Bautista already).

Of course, just because the team makes it to the third film, that doesn't mean they will all be around by the end of it...

Avengers 4 will be released in the UK on April 26, 2019, and in the US on May 3, 2019. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is expected in 2020.
