WWE superstar John Cena may be close to landing a role in Warner Bros' Suicide Squad sequel/reboot.

Variety reports that the former WWE champion is in talks to join the James Gunn-directed project, which is due to begin filming in the autumn.

It will mark the first comic book role for Cena, who has been turning his focus more to acting in recent years, with parts in Trainwreck, Bumblebee and Blockers.

A role in Suicide Squad would also see Cena follow in the footsteps of former WWE champ Dave Bautista, who has worked with Gunn on Guardians of the Galaxy.

The Suicide Squad sequel will see Margot Robbie returning as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney back as Captain Boomerang and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. Idris Elba has also been cast in an undisclosed role.

However, despite the returning characters, the film has been described more as a 'reboot' than a straight-forward sequel.

Speaking about the project last month, producer Peter Safran said: "First of all, we don’t call it Suicide Squad 2 ‘cause it’s a total reboot, so it’s The Suicide Squad and I think people should be extremely excited about it.

"It’s everything you would hope from a James Gunn script and I think that says a lot and that promises a lot and I know that we will deliver a lot."

The Suicide Squad is scheduled for release on August 6, 2021.
