James McCartney and Sean Ono Lennon Team Up to Release Single 'Primrose Hill'

Paul McCartney's only son and John Lennon's younger son released their first-ever collaboration with each other on Friday, April 12

Paul McCartney's son James McCartney and John Lennon's son Sean Ono Lennon are following in their fathers' footsteps — not just by making music, but by writing songs together.

On Friday, April 12, James, 46, released his latest single "Primrose Hill," which he wrote and composed with none other than Sean, the second child of his father's late Beatles bandmate.

James — who is Paul's only son and the youngest child he welcomed with his late wife Linda Eastman — also posted to Instagram to sing praises of his collaborator and celebrate the release.

The musician shared a selfie on Instagram of him and Sean — the late rock star's only child with his second wife Yoko Ono — and he opened up in the caption about how thrilled he was to work with the singer-songwriter.

"‘Primrose Hill’ is here!" James wrote. "Today I am so very excited to share my latest song co-written by my good friend @sean_ono_lennon."

The recording artist also teased that he has even more new music is on the way. "With the release of this song it feels like we’re really getting the ball rolling and I am so excited to continue to share music with you," James added.

He also mentioned in the caption that fans have the opportunity to appear in the forthcoming music video for "Primrose Hill" if they submit footage and enter a contest before the end of this week.

After the song dropped, the legendary Fab Four member, 81, showed his support for his son.

In a post on Facebook, Paul wrote, "My son James has a new song out called 'Primrose Hill' - check it out!"

The rock legend also shared his appreciation for Sean, adding, "And lots of love to Sean Ono Lennon who co-wrote the song ❤️."

In anticipation of the release last week, James opened up in a post on Instagram about the significance of the track, which is a lovely folk-rock song helmed by acoustic guitars and James' voice as he romantically reminisces of laying under the stars with a lover.

Along with an image of the cover artwork, which features a bench on a hilltop, and a snippet of the tune, he shared, "I had a vision as a child in Scotland, on what was a lovely summers day."

"Letting go, I saw my true love and saviour in my mind’s eye. 'Primrose Hill' is about getting the ball rolling with me & finding this person," he revealed.

James and Sean have both had successful solo careers as musicians, although "Primrose Hill" is their first-ever collaboration.

Sean, 48, has been a member of a handful of bands, including Cibo Matto, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger and The Claypool Lennon Delirium, and also composed film scores.

James, meanwhile, has released solo albums and joined his parents on their projects. He appeared on his father's 1997 album Flaming Pie and 2001 effort Driving Rain, as well as Wide Prairie, a compilation released in honor of his mother several months after she died from breast cancer in 1998.

The folk artist last released a full-length album in 2016 with The Blackberry Train, and marked his return to music in early 2024 by dropping the single "Beautiful."
