James Tavernier the Rangers target St Mirren can exploit as Scott Tanser reveals Paisley plan for title pain

Scott Tanser says St Mirren will target the right side of Rangers’ defence today in a bid for three priceless Premiership points.

The Buddies could all but end the Ibrox club’s title hopes in Paisley as they chase down a European spot in the table. And left-back Tanser has revealed Stephen Robinson’s men feel they can exploit Gers skipper James Tavernier – who was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia last week – and his area of the pitch.

The Saints defender said: “For me, he’s (Tavernier) a top player. What he’s done with his goals and assists, that can’t go unnoticed so he’s obviously a big threat. But he’s maybe in a position we can target. We’ve played Rangers before and it’s been me and Greg Kiltie down that side. We’ve worked really well together this season so we’ll be looking to carry that on and hopefully come out with three points.

“That would really kick-start our bid for Europe. This doesn’t come round too often and the boys need to grasp it. In these final five games of the season, we’ll be looking to get as many points as possible. We more than deserve to be in this position and it would be amazing to play in Europe.”

St Mirren gaffer Robinson will be a contender for Manager of the Year in Scotland, especially if he can guide the club into the Conference League qualifying rounds. Tanser said: “He’s been brilliant for me. He’s open and you can talk to him.

“If you’ve got problems, he’ll sort it out and he’s like that with everyone. He’s a great man-manager.”

Robinson knows Saints will have to be at their best to cause an upset in Paisley. He said: “I am under no illusions. Rangers are a good side with a very good manager. They have proved that over the course of the season. Because they lost a game, it certainly doesn’t make them a bad side.

“They had a very good performance in the semi-final. It was a very good game against Hearts on Sunday. I was at Hampden. They have quality throughout the team.”
