The ongoing hype surrounding air fryers certainly doesn't seem like it will disappear anytime soon.

The handy gadgets, known for cooking food quicker and healthier than alternative methods, are here to stay. And if you're starting to struggle with air fryer recipe inspiration, look no further than Jamie Oliver, who has a brand new TV programme focusing on tasty meals prepared using the handy appliances.

His 'absolutely delicious' cheese and chive scone recipe was featured on the first episode of Jamie's Air-Fryer Meals which aired earlier this week on Channel 4. The savoury delights are sure to impress any guests you have, and they take just 12 minutes to cook.

The Mirror reports that speaking on the programme, Jamie said: "These savoury scones are absolutely delicious – crispy and golden, but also fluffy inside – and you can knock them together really quickly." He added that the scones are ideal paired with soup, salad, or part of a ploughman's lunch.

He continued: "Once you've given these a try, why not take them in a different direction or give a sweet version a whirl – the possibilities are endless."

Here's everything you need to make the scones as well as a delicious celery, apple and walnut salad to accompany them. This recipe serves six people.

Jamie Oliver's air fryer scones

Ingredients

  • 200g self-raising flour plus extra for dusting

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon English mustard powder

  • cayenne pepper

  • 75g cold unsalted butter

  • 120g mature Cheddar cheese

  • 1 bunch of chives (20g)

  • 70ml milk , plus extra for brushing

  • olive oil

  • 1 x 200g tub of light cream cheese

  • 1 lemon

For the salad

  • extra virgin olive oil

  • red wine vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon wholegrain mustard

  • 100g watercress

  • ½ a bunch of flat-leaf parsley (15g)

  • 1 red chicory

  • 1 eating apple

  • 1 celery heart

  • 50 g shelled unsalted walnut halves

Method

  1. Sift the flour, baking powder and mustard powder into a bowl, then add a generous pinch each of cayenne pepper and sea salt.

  2. Chop the butter into cubes and rub them into the flour mix until you have little cornflake-sized pieces.

  3. Grate in 100g of the Cheddar, chop and add the chives, then mix together.

  4. Create a well in the middle, pour in the milk, and combine into a soft, dry dough, adding a tiny extra splash of milk if you need to.

  5. Dust a surface with flour, tip the dough out and quickly work the it into a 3cm-thick round, then cut into six wedges.

  6. Brush the tops with a milk, then grate over the remaining cheese and sprinkle with a pinch of cayenne pepper.

  7. Rub the inside of the air-fryer drawer with one tablespoon of olive oil, load in the scones and cook for 12 minutes at 180°C. If your air fryer is small, you might need to do this in batches.

  8. For the salad, drizzle two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and one tablespoon of red wine vinegar onto a large serving platter, add the mustard and a pinch of salt, then whisk together.

  9. Add watercress and parsley, and trim and click over the chicory leaves.

  10. Cut the apple into matchsticks, get rid of the core, then trim and finely slice the celery, and add to the platter. Crumble over the walnuts and mix together.

  11. Combine the cream cheese with the grated lemon zest in a small bowl, then drizzle with one tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil and season with black pepper.

  12. Serve the scones warm with the salad and lemony cream cheese on the side.
