Jamie Redknapp pinpoints the exact moment Liverpool's title race belief 'died'

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes last week's draw against Manchester United was the exact moment Jurgen Klopp's men's belief died in the title race.

The Reds went into Sunday's game looking for a response following the defeat to Atalanta on Thursday night and Manchester City's comfortable victory over Luton Town the day prior. However, they failed to recover after Eberechi Eze bagged for the visitors on 14 minutes.

Jean-Philippe Mateta almost made it 2-0 before half-time but Andy Robertson did exceptionally well to clear the ball off the line. In the second half, Liverpool pressed for an equaliser in front of The Kop with Curtis Jones and Mohamed Salah both going agonisingly close, but the Eagles managed to hang on for a crucial three points.

In the aftermath, Redknapp told Sky Sports a result like this was on the cards after the scoreline at Old Trafford last weekend. "Obviously you’ll look at this game and this one is the loss but I look back to that game last weekend against Manchester United and I think a bit of that belief died that day," the 50-year-old said.

"It doesn’t look like they can take their chances and put teams away. They had so many chances, so many chances, it should’ve been 6-2 in the end really and it’s a game they should’ve won.

"Full credit to Crystal Palace but Liverpool just haven’t got that cutting edge right now." Defeat at Anfield means the title race is out of the Reds' hands.

Liverpool sit two points behind leaders City but could be three points behind the pacesetters if Arsenal beat Aston Villa in the late kick-off on Sunday.
