Last week, Kiefer Sutherland announced via X that his father, Hollywood legend Donald Sutherland had died. He was 88. The post garnered hundreds of thousands of responses in memory of the late actor, one of them being from Sutherland’s Klute co-star, Jane Fonda. In her own moving Instagram post, she remembered Donald and the memories they shared.

“I am stunned to hear that Donald Sutherland has died. He was my fascinating co-star in Klute and we loved working together,” Fonda captioned a photo of Donald on-set. “Donald was a brilliant actor and a complex man who shared quite a few adventures with me, such as the FTA Show, an anti-Vietnam war tour that performed for 60,000 active duty soldiers, sailors, and marines in Hawaii, Okinawa, the Philippines, and Japan in 1971. I am heartbroken.”

Fans joined in the comments to admire their collaborative art and grieve with the Grace and Frankie star. “One of my all-time favorite movies, you two together were so beautiful,” one person commented. “May you find comfort in the wonderful memories you have of your time with him ❤️,” another added. “Very sorry for your loss and hours, he was truly one of a kind 🙌,” someone else wrote.

In Kiefer’s post, he shared a black-and-white portrait of his childhood self with his dad. “With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away,” he wrote. “I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad, or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.” Donald starred in the many successes including classic TV series M*A*S*H, Ordinary People, The Hunger Games movie trilogy, and more.

In a follow-up statement, Creative Artists Agency revealed his cause of death. “Acclaimed actor Donald Sutherland died today in Miami, Florida after a long illness,” the statement read, per NBC News. It did not disclose any further details about his passing.
