Jane McDonald's fiance Eddie Rothe passes away after lung cancer battle

Jane McDonald is mourning the loss of her longtime fiance Eddie Rothe following his death at the age of 68.

In a statement published on the former Loose Women star's Twitter account on Wednesday, it was announced that Walter 'Eddie' Rothe, 68, passed away on 26 March after a battle with lung cancer and his funeral had taken place on Wednesday morning.

"It is with immense sadness that we share the news that Jane's beloved life partner, Ed, passed away on Friday 26th March," the statement reads. "He had been battling lung cancer for the last few months. We would like to thank everyone for all their help and support during this very difficult time, especially the NHS staff and the wonderful team at The Wakefield Hospice.

"The funeral took place earlier today and we would please ask for your kindness in observing Jane's privacy for her and Ed's family at this sad time."

The statement was accompanied by a selfie of Jane, 58, and Eddie, the former drummer of The Searchers, smiling for the camera.

The Jane & Friends host previously explained that she first met Eddie back in 1980 when she was only 17 and they dated briefly before splitting up. The singer went on to marry twice but after she became single again in the early 2000s, she rekindled her relationship with Eddie and they got engaged in 2008.

Reps for Loose Women took to the show's Twitter account to send Jane their condolences following the announcement.

"Our deepest condolences go to our friend and former Loose Woman Jane McDonald whose life partner Ed Rothe has passed away. Ed was a part of our Loose Women family for many years and appeared on our show on numerous occasions. We’re sending love to Jane and her and Ed’s family," they wrote.

Meanwhile, Jane's former co-host Nadia Sawalha tweeted, "I’m so sorry for your loss Jane. So dreadfully sad. Sending my deepest condolences."
