Shortly after a heated exchange between Reps. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) and Nancy Mace (R-SC) during a House committee meeting earlier this week, the Texas Democrat said she received a creepy phone call from a Republican staffer that seemingly doubled down on Mace’s threats of “violence.”

“That was a pretty heated exchange between y’all and Mace. My money’s on Mace,” the staffer said on the call, according to Crockett’s office.

She did not name who the staffer was—but the Texas Democrat said she isn’t taking the call lightly.

“I will say that I think that I do need to take it seriously, because violence has become a very real thing in this chamber, and ultimately, kind of in this country when it comes to politics,” she said. “And she threatened violence.”

Mace, a representative for South Carolina’s 1st congressional district and a an outspoken domestic violence survivor, insisted in an X post that she did not in fact mean fisticuffs when she said “take it outside” during a Tuesday meeting of the House Oversight Committee.

“I’m no child. And if I wanted a physical fight, you’d know it. That’s not what this was,” she wrote on X. “I won’t be bullied by someone who wants to take away women’s rights while lecturing about civil rights. I won’t be bullied by someone who thinks being scared of rape is a ‘fantasy.’ This ain’t political, it’s personal.”

However Crockett said the damage has already been done because of how her base could use her words as an excuse to take action.

“She needs to be careful about trying to do that stuff, literally, because she’s just trying to get clicks and trying to raise money, but it does incite violence, period, not only on me, but on her,” said Crockett. “So she needs to be careful, and honestly, it’s just unbecoming of a member of Congress.”

Setting an example starts “at the top,” said Crockett. “When this type of behavior is not checked... then it allows other little people to believe that they can just do whatever to a hosted member of Congress,” she added.
