Jay Slater Airbnb man breaks silence over 'not talking to UK investigators'

A mystery man who took Jay Slater back to his Airbnb in Tenerife has discussed why he hasn't spoken to UK investigators. Ayub Qassim invited Jay, 19, back to his rented holiday cottage after a rave in Tenerife hours before he vanished on June 17.

Qassim said he had only spoken to authorities in Tenerife. He said: "I've spoken to the Spanish police and they've told me not to speak to anyone which is why I've been quiet. I've not spoken to Mark Williams-Thomas or anyone like him because he doesn't have any jurisdiction in Tenerife, and I haven't done anything wrong."

The owner of the Airbnb where Jay stayed – which is an 11-hour walk from his accommodation – said she saw Jay set off on foot early the next day after he had missed his bus back. Ophelia, proprietor of Casa Abuela Tina, the holiday let where Jay reportedly stayed with acquaintances made at the NRG festival, said: "It's dangerous walking around here, it's easy to lose yourself.

"He walked up the road when I saw him for the last time. He was alone. He was walking normally, though he was fast." Mum Debbie described her condition as a 'living nightmare', expressing regret that she didn't advise her son against travelling to Tenerife prior to his disappearance. In an interview with ITV News, she emotionally stated: "I wouldn't wish this on anybody. I want my baby back. It's a nightmare, an absolute living nightmare."

Jay was last spotted donning a white T-shirt, shorts, trainers and carrying a black bag. A fundraising campaign initiated by Ms Law to "get Jay Slater home" has since amassed over £24,000 in donations. A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office stated: "We are supporting the family of a British man who has been reported missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities."
