The case of a British teenager who vanished while on holiday in Tenerife continues to be shrouded in mystery as the search intensifies on the island.

Jay Slater, 19, travelled to the Canary Island with friends for the NRG Weekender music festival but has not been seen or heard from since Monday morning. The apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, had been out with his friends the night before when he decided to stay out while they returned to their accommodation.

He later called a friend the following morning claiming he was lost and had ended up on another part of the island with another friend, and was trying to hike back after missing the bus. Jay's mother Debbie and brother Zak have since flown out to the island after police officers knocked on their door in the early hours of Tuesday morning informing them he was missing.

As information is being pieced together, both police and loved ones are desperately seeking answers about Jay's whereabouts.

Here's a timeline of the missing teen:, reports the Mirror.

Sunday evening, June 16: Jay is out with friends when he decides to stay out and go off with other pals, one of whom has a hire car.

8.35pm: Jay is seen in the last Snapchat clip before his disappearance, wearing a grey T-shirt with a green trim.

Monday June 17, 8.15am: Friend Lucy receives a call from Jay to say he is lost in a rural area, thirsty and has only 1% battery on his phone. He tells his friends he missed the bus back and is attempting to walk back using a maps app on his phone.

8.50am: Jay's phone battery depletes.

9.04am: Tenerife authorities receive a report of concern.

Tuesday, 2am: Police inform Jay's mother Debbie Duncan and stepfather Andy Watson of his disappearance.

11.35am: Debbie and her other son Zak arrive in Tenerife on the earliest available flight.

The question of where is Jay?

Local police, alongside the British Embassy, are exerting all efforts to locate the missing lad. Debbie has taken the first plane to join the search in Tenerife.

Jay was last known to be in Rural del Teno, a rugged region to the island's west, near Santiago del Teide town. He had been lodging with mates in the south at an apartment, and according to his friend Lucy, he tried to trek back on foot, a journey taking roughly 11 hours.

Lucy shared with the MEN: "He's gone on a night out, he's gone to a friend's house, someone that he has met on holiday. One of the people he has met has hired a car out of here, so he's driven them back to his apartment and Jay has gone there not realising how far away it is. He's ended up out in the middle of nowhere. Jay was obviously thinking he would be able to get home from there."

"But then in the morning he's set off walking, using his Maps on his phone and ended up in the middle of mountains with nothing around. He rang me at about 8 o'clock morning saying his phone was on 1%, he said 'I don't know where I am, I need a drink and my phone is about to die'."

On the day of Jay's strange disappearance on the island, temperatures were recorded at 26 degrees celsius and mountain rescue teams have been dispatched by local police to search the areas where he was last sighted.

Why Jay didn't wait for a bus or make other arrangements for transport?

Lucy, a friend of Jay's, tells us that he had met up with other friends who drove him in a rented car to a different part of the island. Jay missed his bus back and found himself stranded in the rural hilly part of the island while attempting to navigate back on foot.

It isn't currently known whether there were any nearby transport facilities for Jay to return to where he'd been staying with friends, or if he was able to hail a ride or wait for a taxi.

Moments before his disappearance, Jay had been engaging in normal conversations with friends over Snapchat, his mental state was stable. His phone's power exhausted around 8.50am, having last registered his location as being near a hiking route above the tiny village of Masca.

Speaking to LancsLive about the unsettling circumstances surrounding Jay's disappearance, stepfather Andy Watson, aged 63, spoke about the devastating moment when officers showed up at their Oswaldtwistle home barely 24 hours later: "When the police said 'the best thing you can do is get yourself out there' we knew it was bad," he told us. "This was his first holiday on his own. I'm just hoping he's gone to another party."

Mum Debbie Duncan said that Jay might have had "a fair bit of alcohol" before his disappearance, but importantly, his mates said he seemed mentally stable at the time. She remarked: "I just think it was a question of him not knowing the island well enough because it was his first time here and being a bit disorientated when it came to distances and not realising it was a 10-hour walk from where he went missing to his holiday accommodation."

"I know the last place he spoke to his friend Lucy from was in the mountains and I think the police have got a more precise location now. I imagine they're also speaking to the people whose place he went back to. Once I've spoken to the British consulate again I'll be clearer about what I'm going to do but I imagine we will head up north nearer the spot Jay was when he disappeared."

Who's behind the cruel prank calls?

Debbie, alongside her son Zak, took an early flight from Manchester to Tenerife on Tuesday morning after hearing the distressing news. She shared how they were 'beside themselves' with worry and had been tormented by vile hoax calls from individuals with "northern accents" claiming they had Jay captive.

The pranksters were dialling from hidden numbers, alleging they had Jay because he owed them money. "Some of the phone calls I've been getting have been horrible," she disclosed.

"I just don't know why people would want to do things like this."

"I've been getting lots of prank calls. It's sickening. People ringing me and saying they've got Jay because he owes them money. But it's not putting me off and I want to keep this in the news because it's going to increase the chances of Jay being found safe and well which is obviously what we're praying for."
