It has now been more than a week since there has been any contact from Jay Slater. The 19-year-old, who was on holiday for the first time with friends, disappeared while attempting to walk back to his accommodation after missing a bus on the island of Tenerife.

The search for the apprentice bricklayer has now entered its second week with police on the island continuing to search the remote area where his phone signal was last logged. The walk from Mr Slater’s last known location, Rural de Teno Park in the north of the island, to his accommodation would have taken about 11 hours on foot.

Search teams in Tenerife narrowed their efforts over the weekend on small buildings close to where his phone last pinged. Officers from the Guardia Civil in the Canary Islands could be seen circling two structures at the bottom of a ravine in Rural de Teno Park on Sunday.

When Jay was last heard from

Jay, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, attended the NRG music festival with friends at Papagayo nightclub in the tourist resort of Playa de las Americas in the south of the island.

In the early hours of Monday (June 17) he went to stay in an apartment in the north of the island with people he had met over the course of the night. Their details have not been made public. You can get more story updates straight to your inbox by subscribing to our newsletters here.

At 7.30am on the Monday Jay posted a picture on Snapchat from the doorway of the property he stayed at overnight, tagged as being in Rural de Teno park.

An hour later, he called his friend friend, Lucy Law, to tell her he had attempted to walk back to his accommodation after missing his bus. She said her friend told her in the frantic phone call last Monday at 8.30am that he was "lost in the mountains, he wasn't aware of his surroundings, he desperately needed a drink and his phone was on 1%". The walk from Mr Slater's last known location, Rural de Teno Park in the north of the island, to his accommodation would have taken about 10 to 11 hours on foot.

He was reported missing at 9.04am that morning. Mr Slater was last seen wearing a white T-shirt with shorts and trainers, and carrying a black bag.

'Living hell' for Jay's family

After friends spend the Monday searching for Jay, local police and mountain rescue teams were called in to scour Rural de Teno park.

His family back home in the UK are alerted to what is happening and fly out to Tenerife to join the search. Jay's mother, Debbie Duncan, was woken in the middle of the night and told to get to Tenerife as quickly as possible.

She expressed her anguish, calling the search for her son "an absolute living nightmare". She arrived in Tenerife on Tuesday with her eldest son and told ITV News: "He's the life and soul, he's a beautiful boy."

The distraught mother also said that people with 'northern accents' had been phoning her claiming her son was being held captive and wouldn't be released until money had been handed over.

Over the weekend, the teenager's mother issued a direct plea to her missing son, saying: "We just need you home." Debbie said she had "not slept".

Jay's day Warren Slater, 55, has joined the search, putting up posters in the hopes for a lead in the case. Warren said: "I just want him to be found, simples. I just want my son back, end of. What more is there, it's been a week now, a week of nothing, so somebody somewhere must've found out something. Somebody. It is a living hell, unless you're going through it, you cannot explain."

He added: "Please, please please, if anybody knows anything just come forward and help us. I don't know if anything untoward has happened to Jay, one minute he is here, next minute he's disappeared. I don't believe he's still in that mountain. The police have put every effort into finding him. The authorities have done everything they can in the search, everybody is up there looking for him.

"We need everybody to help us to search through this wilderness, everybody. It's barren."

A photo of Jay taken just hours before his disappearance showed him at the rave. He departed with two newfound acquaintances and vanished the following day.

A week after he disappeared, his family shared an image of a 'possible sighting' His family and friends claim the image appears to show a male walking past a church in a village around 6pm on Monday - roughly ten hours after he was reportedly last heard from. They believe the blurry image could potentially resemble Jay, reports the Manchester Evening News.

CCTV footage captured a man, that they claim matches Jay’s description, walking through a church square in the small village of Santiago del Teide.

The potential sighting is yet to be confirmed by local police or the Civil Guard. The village is situated about 7km away from Masca and the area where Jay is said to have disappeared.

The open church square is covered by a CCTV camera above the door of the nearby town hall. The Parroquia de San Fernando Rey church is situated in the centre of the village, close to the turning for the steep road through the mountains towards Masca.

Debbie said: "We don't know if it was Jay for sure, but it's a start. They said it was about 6pm which is 10 hours after he was seen by the lady in the village. But if it was him what was he doing there and who are these two men?" She added: "Everyone loves being in his company, and he was having a laugh with these guys.

"He wouldn't have seen the danger, he didn't have his wits about him, he just wanted to go and have fun. It's just traumatic and it doesn't feel real. It's just awful, it's horrendous. He's just a great person who everyone wanted to be with. He's good looking, he's a popular boy." Police are yet to respond to reports of the possible sighting of Jay.

Striking thing about the Tenerife Airbnb

A reporter who visited the Airbnb where Jay spent his last known night has described the sheer remoteness of the location. The secluded holiday let, named Casa Abuela Tina, is located just outside the village of Masca.

It's believed that he stayed there with individuals he met at a music festival. The accommodation owner later reported seeing him on Monday, walking uphill into the mountains by himself.

The holiday cottage is situated midway up a mountain, just outside of Masca. It takes around an hour to get to from the popular resort of Los Cristianos - where Jay and his friends were staying in a booked apartment.

It was difficult to reach even by car. With just one road in and out, which is beside a steep cliff with nail-bitingly tight corners, it seemed only few tourists visited the village, very much off the beaten track, to experience the views, the majority of which were on pre-booked tours.

The scale of the search

Emergency searches involving Civil Guard officers, firefighters and mountain rescue teams have been ongoing in the vast area since his disappearance.

Search teams in Tenerife narrowed their efforts over the weekend on small buildings close to where his phone last pinged.

Officers from the Guardia Civil in the Canary Islands could be seen circling two structures at the bottom of a ravine in Rural de Teno Park on Sunday.

Efforts appeared to be solely focused on the one area after days of searches in the village of Masca and the surrounding landscape.

Spanish police have rejected an offer of support from Lancashire Constabulary as the hunt continues.

Police, firefighters and search and rescue personnel have been combing a vast area of land in and around the village of Masca.

Search and rescue personnel carefully looked through dead palm trees covering a river at the bottom of the hillside near to an Airbnb property Mr Slater had reportedly been driven to.

The owner of the property told reporters she saw Mr Slater walk up the road past her property but did not see him again after that - describing the situation as worrying.

A fundraiser set up by the last person to speak to Mr Slater hit its target of £30,000 on Sunday. The GoFundMe created by Lucy Law to "get Jay Slater home" had received £33,000 in donations by Monday morning.

A post on the page from Mr Slater's mother, Debbie Duncan, confirmed the fundraiser was "approved by our family".

The post, published on Sunday, said: "We have not yet withdrawn any funds and are currently covering the expenses, such as the trip to Tenerife and accommodation, ourselves. The funds will remain on hold with GoFundMe until we post a further update on this page.

"We are extremely worried and are doing everything we can to find Jay."

A GoFundMe spokesperson said: "We are in touch with Jay Slater's mother, Debbie, and working with her to keep everyone updated on how their donations will be used in the search. For now, the money is with GoFundMe as we work through the next steps."

Ms Law said her friend told her in a frantic phone call last Monday at 8.30am that he was "lost in the mountains, he wasn't aware of his surroundings, he desperately needed a drink and his phone was on 1%".
