Spanish police are beginning their re-search of a 'challenging' landscape in Tenerife in a bid to find missing British teenager Jay Slater - but say there have been 'no developments'.

Officers from the Civil Guard, the police force leading the search, were seen using binoculars looking over the dangerous landscape close to the small village of Masca and the remote area where the 19-year-old's phone last 'pinged' - around half a mile north of the AirBnB he stayed at on Sunday night before leaving on foot.

The Civil Guard told the Manchester Evening News at the scene this morning that there have still been 'no developments' as they remained stationed at the Parque Rural de Teno. The widespread search through difficult terrain seemed to have been scaled back on Friday (June 21).

On Thursday, police dogs were deployed along with helicopters, scaling the mountains and searching through mass undergrowth. Videos shared by the Civil Guard showed a number of specialist officers and mountain rescue teams walking through the challenging terrain.

However on Friday, Jay's friends who flew out to help were not present at the previous search site, in rural Masca, with just small numbers of tourists braving the drive to appreciate the surrounding scenery. A spokesperson for the Civil Guard said it could not confirm any more details amid the ongoing search.

A statement said: “There is a research on going and the police operation is focused on the area of Masca (Tenerife). By now we can not confirm any more information."

Jay has been missing on the Spanish island since Monday morning (June 17). The 19-year-old, from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, had flown to the Canary Islands with two friends to attend the NRG music festival, but failed to return to their accommodation in Los Cristianos on Sunday evening after going to stay in an apartment with people he had met.

His friend Lucy Mae Law last heard from him at around 8am on Monday morning when he called her to say his phone was going to die and that he needed water as was walking in 'the middle of nowhere'.

Searches for the apprentice bricklayer have been focused in the north-west island in the Rural de Teno Park, a mountainous area popular with hikers. On Wednesday, the Civil Guard said officers had switched their search to the south of the island in tourist hotspots close to where Jay was staying with friends in Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas.

They then confirmed the search had returned to the north of the island. However tourists in the south have spotted the police helicopter 'going up and down and up and down' repeatedly over recent days.

They added that they have seen police officers patrolling down the busy beach front since news of Jay's disappearance came to light. Jay's family, including his mum Debbie, have flown out to the Spanish island to assist officers.

Debbie said she was in a 'living nightmare' and said she wished she'd told her son not to go to Tenerife before he went missing. Speaking to ITV News, she said: "I wouldn't wish this on anybody. I want my baby back. It's a nightmare, an absolute living nightmare."
