Jay Slater's family given major police update as TikTok climber flies home after row

Police have told Jay Slater’s family that they can use their own search and rescue teams to look for the teenager ‘without any problem’.

The Guardia Civil has told Sky News that the family has to notify them of their plans to use search teams "for good management of information and resources" but they have not yet had a request.

Jay, from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, disappeared on the Spanish island on June 17. He was last seen leaving an Airbnb in the north of the island, close to the village of Masca, at around 8am that morning.

The 19-year-old’s last known location was the Rural de Teno Park in the north of the Canary Island – which was about an 11-hour walk back to his accommodation.

Police called off the official land hunt on June 30 but Jay’s mum Debbie Duncan and her family have said they will stay on the island to look for him.

Jay’s family told Sky News they want to use some of the money from the GoFundMe page, which has raised almost £50,000 following the teenager’s disappearance, to pay for specialist search and rescue teams - but were waiting for permission from the authorities.

The clarification from the Guardia Civil today (Friday) comes after a row between the family and TikToker Callum Fahim, who flew to Tenerife to help look for Jay but later quit the search after receiving death threats.

Callum claims he has not seen any of the money raised from the GoFundMe page and plans to return to the UK after spending two weeks in Spain.

He said: "I haven't had anything from the GoFundMe. We have not had a bit of essentials paid for.

"I've never had any money from them whatsoever or even offers to go and pick anything up. If they had offered it, personally I would've said maybe a bit of a treat at the end of the week, but don't worry about it."

Callum told Sky News that he paid to fly to Tenerife himself and after a 'long conversation' with Jay’s mum Debbie Duncan.

"It's getting very out of control. The situation here is very dangerous at the moment.

"I have had death threats. I had a long conversation with her [Ms Duncan] and decided I'm withdrawing."

He said he and his group have not seen a penny of the money raised on a GoFundMe page after a post from the family said he and another TikToker Paul Arnott had received support from the funds.

Speaking to Sky News, Jay’s family said Debbie gave Callum £740 of her own money for accommodation but he turned "bitter" after they refused to give him more

"We appreciate every single person who's come out," they said.

"He's a hiker. We don't need hikers, we need experts."
