Jay Slater's mum says 'I cannot believe it' as she hits out at 'British public'

Jay Slater's mum has slammed trolls over a £33,000 GoFundMe appeal as the hunt for the missing teen continues. Speaking out on Facebook, Jay's mum Debbie said: "I am really am saddened by all your comments. You seem to be so bothered about this GoFundMe page.

"I really hope I am not taking my son home in a body bag. I really cannot believe the British public are not supporting me in trying to find Jay." The comments from Debbie come as she headed over to Tenerife to help search for her beloved boy.

"This may happen to any of you one day. Very let down by you all." Debbie also pleaded with the public to let the cops handle the situation rather than getting involved online. Carol Vorderman, meanwhile, was slammed on Monday after she moved to say the disappearance of teenager Jay in Tenerife has made her reflect on the time she went missing following the death of her Countdown co-star Richard Whiteley.

Ms Vorderman told LBC listeners that following the death of Mr Whiteley she just locked herself away for days and didn’t communicate with anyone as she discussed the hunt for the British teenager on her show on Sunday (23 June).

Her comments sparked some backlash from listeners online. One person said: “I don’t think this is the same thing Carol!!?.” Lancashire Constabulary said it has offered to support Spanish police "if they need any additional resources", but the offer was rejected.

The force added: "They have confirmed that at this time they are satisfied that they have the resources they need, but that offer remains open and they will contact us should that position change." The Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said in a statement: "We are supporting the family of a British man who has been reported missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities."

Mr Slater's stepfather Andy Watson told The Sun his stepson is "no mug" and "very streetwise", but that he may have lost his bearings while it was dark.
