Wednesday‘s Jenna Ortega and The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal — and the luxury brands they were wearing — captured the No. 1 spots in the Top 5 Women and Top 5 Men categories in the latest 2024 Red Carpet Power Rankings, an exclusive partnership between The Hollywood Reporter and Launchmetrics. Using a proprietary algorithm, the AI-driven software, data and analytics company tracks the media-impact value (MIV) of earned exposure, assigning a monetary value to the combined influence of brands from online and social media posts and editorial stories.

Ortega’s Dior Haute Couture look, a strapless tulle dress featuring a hand-embroidered floral and trellis motif, paired with gold and diamond jewels by Dior Joaillerie, earned $5.6 million in media-impact value, far and away the top position among both women and men on the 2023 Emmy Awards red carpet.

By contrast, Pascal’s ensemble — custom-designed for the actor by Valentino creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli — resulted in an MIV of $1.2 million. Translation: Men may be increasingly adventurous about their red carpet style, but women’s fashion still garners the lion’s share of conversation.

“Jenna Ortega stuns” is indeed an easily searchable phrase among Emmy-night fashion stories, as the actress’ ethereal Dior Haute Couture dress by creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri quickly emerged as a favorite at the Jan. 15 awards show. Dior, which boasts an Instagram following of 45.6 million, garnered 239,900 likes for its post about Ortega, who is a global ambassador for the legendary Paris house, a testament to how a brand’s own social media can boost its earned exposure on the red carpet.

The power of Ortega’s dress is even more impressive considering that Edebiri, who took home the 2023 Emmy for best supporting actress, likely garnered both more camera time and more headlines as one of the night’s high-profile winners. Edebiri’s leather sculpted strapless dress, a custom design by Louis Vuitton, earned a media-impact value of $3.3 million. Rounding out the top 5 women’s looks: Jessica Chastain in a fluorescent green fringed gown by Gucci, Aubrey Plaza in a bespoke silk pin dress by Loewe and Riley Keough in a Chanel ensemble that blended shorts under an organza gown.

Of that trio, it’s notable that Plaza’s spot partly may be due to a popular meme that emerged during the evening, comparing the top of the actress’ gown to an infamous yellow Post-It note from a season-six episode of Sex and the City. But Plaza good-naturedly joined in the fun, including the meme in her own Instagram slideshow of her Emmys look.

TOP 5 MEN: PEDRO PASCAL AND HIS STYLISH SLING

The Last of Us lead Pascal has historically exuded an unconventional vibe on red carpets, eschewing suits and tuxedos in favor of separates and cozy knits, which convey an attitude that’s equal parts relaxed and free-spirited. At the Emmys, Piccioli’s custom look for the actor still felt decidedly sleek and polished, while accommodating the sling Pascal has been sporting due to a shoulder injury.

Not unlike Ortega and Edebiri, another Emmy winner found himself in the No. 2 spot, with best actor winner White earning a media-impact value of $998,000 for his Giorgio Armani Made-to-Measure look, a white evening jacket with matching shirt, black trousers and bow tie. Menswear red carpet trends are a bit solidified by this one-two placement, with White’s more traditional look taking second place behind Pascal’s more forward-thinking ensemble.

Taking both the third and fourth positions, Abbott Elementary star and best supporting actor nominee Tyler James Williams likewise demonstrated the power of nontraditional red carpet attire. His Dolce & Gabbana black leather suit, consisting of a double-breasted shawl lapel jacket with coordinating pants, caused a social-media frenzy when he arrived, among the reasons the Italian label earned $596,000 in media-impact value, while his Cartier jewels, including a C de Cartier necklace in 18-karat white gold and diamonds, followed close behind with $350,000 in MIV.

Rounding out the top 5 placements is Trevor Noah, who accepted the best talk series Emmy wearing Giorgio Armani’s double-breasted evening jacket in black velvet, with the show’s win surely contributing to Noah’s fifth-place ranking and an MIV of $311,000.

Next up for the Red Carpet Power Rankings: the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, where Taylor Swift, Jon Batiste and Phoebe Bridgers are among the nominated artists expected to dominate the spotlight on the red carpet.
