Jeremy Allen White Thanks “Those Who Stayed Close to Me” As He Accepts Best Comedy Actor Emmy

Jeremy Allen White accepted the award for best lead actor in a comedy series at the 2023 Emmy Awards on Sunday night, thanking “all those who have stayed close to me, especially in this past year.”

“I am so full of gratitude to be standing in front of you all,” White told the crowd. He won the Emmy for his performance as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto in FX’s The Bear. Though the show released its second season in June 2023, the trophy recognizes his performance in season one, released 2022. The Bear‘s second season rolled out just after the Emmys eligibility deadline.

“I love the show so much, it filled me up. It gave me a passion, it set a fire in me, to match the beautiful work done by [creator] Christopher Storer and [executive producer] Joanna Calo. I love you guys, thank you, thank you, thank you.”

White went on to shout out “the beautiful cast and beautiful crew” along with his mother and father, the latter of whom was in the crowd to celebrate. “I love you so much, thank you to all those who stayed close to me, especially in the past year. You know who you are,” he said.

White’s ex-wife, Addison Timlin, filed for divorce from the actor in May 2023, one month before The Bear premiered its second season. The former couple shares two children, Ezer and Dolores, and White finished his speech with a tribute to them.

“I love you so much, this is for you,” he told his kids. “Thank you.”

The Bear earned eight total nominations at the 2023 Emmy Awards, including for best comedy series, best writing and best directing alongside acting nods for guest stars Jon Bernthal and Oliver Platt. Stars Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach both won in their respective categories earlier in the evening.

White’s trophy continues his winning streak during this year’s awards season — he took home accolades for the same category at the Golden Globes earlier this month and the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday. Though the Globes and Critics Choice awards were for The Bear‘s second season.

White beat out Bill Hader (Barry), Jason Segel (Shrinking), Martin Short (Only Murders in the Building) and Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso) for the 2023 Emmy Award.

The 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards were originally set to air Sept. 18 but were pushed to January following the writers and actors strikes last summer. See the full winners list here.
