Yahoo News Jeremy Allen White Wins Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series Emmy for ‘The Bear’
Jeremy Allen White won his first-ever Emmy Award for his performance as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto in “The Bear.”
Along with being a breakout hit for FX, the series proved to be career-changing for multiple cast members including White, who came to the show after a long run on Showtime’s “Shameless.” IndieWire’s Anne Thompson called “The Bear” a “career-defining” role for the actor, also back in the public eye after costarring with Zac Efron in “The Iron Claw.”

“With ‘The Bear,’ suddenly a new audience was responding to him in a different way,” Thompson wrote in August of 2023. “White was not only a great actor able to carry the lead in a series that was the talk of Hollywood, but to many, he was a hunky sex object. He was that guy that men and women agreed at dinner parties was ‘hot.’ His piercing blue eyes, often shot in close-up on the show, haven’t been seen since the likes of Paul Newman — an actor White admires.”
The Emmy win arrives on the heels of the actor winning his first Golden Globe for the role, which also earned him a past nomination. The January 15 Emmys celebrated Season 1 of Christopher Storer’s FX series about a high-octane Chicago restaurant and the dreams and entanglements of its employees. Other acting nominations included Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (Ayo Edibiri) and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Ebon Moss-Bachrach). Storer also received nominations for Outstanding Directing and Writing in a Comedy Series, and the show’s editing, sound, and casting teams were honored in the January 6 Creative Arts Emmys with five wins.
White shared the category with Bill Hader (“Barry”), Jason Segel (“Shrinking”), Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”), and Martin Short (“Only Murders in the Building”). Both Hader and Sudeikis have won the award before, with Sudeikis previously two-for-two with wins for his role in and as “Ted Lasso.” and it was the final Emmys for “Barry” and “Ted Lasso.”
IndieWire gave “The Bear” Season 1 a B- (Season 2 was a letter grade higher), praising White’s performance (“a strong turn”) and the authenticity in meticulously crafted moments of the series’ tense kitchen setting.
The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards were held Monday, January 15 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox. The ceremony, which usually takes place in September, was delayed to accommodate the WGA and SAG strikes. That’s why the nominees do not include any shows released after the May 31, 2023 filing deadline, including “The Curse,” “Fargo,” and other fall and winter premieres. The 76th Emmy Awards telecast is expected to run on the traditional schedule.
