Jesmond's Dosa Kitchen launches new pizza business in restaurant's outdoor area

A popular Indian restaurant in Jesmond has launched a new business in its outdoor area serving Indian-inspired pizzas.

Dosa Kitchen on Osborne Road has established itself as a firm favourite among Newcastle foodies for its South Indian cuisine. Last year, it became the first Indian restaurant in the North East to be included in the Good Food Guide.

With a huge outdoor space at the restaurant, co-owner and chef Sud Murugavel is now expanding the business further, with the creation of a new pizza business named 2Rowdy's. Sud told ChronicleLive: "The outside space was a little underutilised because most people would sit in after the lockdown.

"We were thinking of what to do there, so we came up with the idea of doing Indian pizzas." Dosa Kitchen's food trailer has been rebranded and pizza ovens have been installed, with a "soft launch" early in June.

Sud claims that 2 Rowdy's pizzas are different to any other pizzas diners may have had before. The chef and his team have been trialling different ideas for the last three to four months, and feel they've come up with some mouth-watering concoctions including lamb keema, pulled pork vindaloo, and tandoori chicken.

Starting with a sourdough base, their pizzas are topped with a curry sauce, rather than the Italian style tomato sauce, before being meat and/or vegetables marinated in Indian spices. Sud continued: "When you go to a lot of takeaways they do an Indian pizza with the same tomato sauce, and marinate the chicken with some tandoori masala.

"What we want to do is create the full experience, so we've done a full Italian sourdough base, but with the Indian curry and topping together."

Sud believes that 2 Rowdy's has had a good reaction in its opening weeks, and hopes that eventually 2 Rowdy's will enjoy a similar level of success to Dosa Kitchen, which ChronicleLive gave a glowing review last year. It is hoped that Dosa Kitchen will make the Good Food Guide's shortlist of 100 best local restaurants 2024, with results expected in the coming weeks.

Sud finished: "Last year it was an amazing feeling to be the first Indian restaurant in the North East to be in the Good Food Guide. I'm hoping we get into the top 100 but if not we've achieved so much by bringing food to Newcastle that's not very familiar, but people still enjoy it".
