Jess Phillips heckled during election result as she says 'you can't bear seeing a strong woman up here'

Furious Jess Phillips launched a broadside at Gaza activists who jeered and booed as she held onto her Birmingham Yardley seat by a much-reduced margin. She described the campaign against her as the worst she has ever experienced.

Some activists had to be ejected for disrupting the announcement of the results, as Phillips just about held back tears as she emotionally described the aggressive campaign against her. As men shouted 'shame on you' at her, she faced them down, responding: "You can't bear seeing a strong woman up here."

As calm was restored, she said: "This election has been the worst campaign I have ever been involved in. Today a brilliant community activist who puts on events for every single part of our community went out to campaign for me and was filmed on the streets and then had her tyres slashed. A young woman on her own delivering leaflets was filmed and screamed at by a much older man.

"Today I was due to be joined on the election trail by the family of (murdered MP) Jo Cox and there is absolutely no way I could have allowed them to see what was going on here, what was aggressive and violent in our democracy."

She won the seat with a much-reduced majority, getting 11,275 votes, with Workers Party candidate Jody McIntyre getting 10,582 votes. She said Birmingham Yardley had given her family 'everything' from her parents onwards, and successive Labour governments had provided the support they had all needed.

She said: "Our country is in desperate need and our politics is even greater need. I thank everyone in this need for proving that for me.

She thanked her supporters and staff, and also thanked the police 'for taking constant phone calls from me and for their response to the aggression we have suffered."
