Jesus Christ Superstar at Birmingham Hippodrome reviewed - a must-see for every theatre lover

I'd heard of the award-winning musical Jesus Christ Superstar but never seen it before - so was delighted when it arrived in Birmingham this week as part of its huge UK tour.

It's in Brum for one week only - and it's a must-see for theatre lovers. A 1970 Broadway rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of the last week of Jesus' life through modern rock music and contemporary slang.

It also tells the story through the eyes of Judas, the apostle who will eventually betray Jesus. It's directed by Timothy Sheader of Into the Woods and the music and lyrics are by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.

The production, which is currently touring the country, boasts a hugely talented cast. The show was set simply on one set for the entire production, and the singing and dancing of the full cast was incredible to watch. Every single person had so much fire and energy.

The one thing that stood out for me during Jesus Christ Superstar was the absolutely incredible vocals of the cast - most particularly Ian McIntosh who played Jesus, Jad Habchi as Caiaphas and Matt Bateman as Annas. The music and singing is non-stop - there isn't a word spoken in the performance that isn't in song. I loved this.

Timo Tatzber as Herod was also extra special to watch with his dazzling and flamboyant performance. And while every song is worth a mention in this incredible performance, a personal favourite of mine was This Jesus Must Die, which was made sensational by performers Habchi and Bateman.

A mention must also go out to the incredible Louise Francis, the understudy to Hannah Richardson, who stepped into the role of Mary Magdalene for the opening night in Birmingham. Her rendition of I Don't Know How To Love Him was beautifully moving.

This is one show every theatre lover must see - Jesus Christ Superstar is at the Hippodrome until this Saturday. Visit birminghamhippodrome.com for tickets and further information.
