Looking ahead to the summer transfer window, Don Goodman believes Jhon Duran should stay at Aston Villa with Unai Emery having the final say on the matter.

Through no fault of his own, Duran's minutes have been limited at Villa throughout the 2023/24 campaign. He has made only 21 appearances in the Premier League, two of which were starts, as fellow striker Ollie Watkins has made himself indispensable by racking up a total 31 goal contributions.

This has led to some questions over the Colombian's long-term future, even just 18 months from arriving in a £14.3m deal from Chicago Fire. Chelsea are just one club linked with a move, however Goodman feels the best option is for the 20-year-old to stay put.

"Unai Emery strikes me as a very strong character, so if he doesn’t want him to leave the football club he won’t be going anywhere," the former West Brom and Wolves star-turned-pundit told Villa News.

"He’s a player who is young and we have seen the raw potential he has. The most difficult thing for youngsters is finding consistency, but he certainly has all the tools to be a very, very top striker in the Premier League.

"He’s physical and knows where the net is. What separates the best strikers is the decision-making process and the decisions they make in the final third and the ones that make the right choices more often than not.

"They know when to pass, when to run, when to shoot, when to dribble and when to cross. That’s the area he needs to possibly work on, but he’s at the right place and under the right head coach to improve. If I were him, I wouldn’t be keen to get off too quickly."

It seems inevitable more transfer whispers will surface as the summer transfer window beckons once the season is over. At that point it will be up to the parties involved to find a quick solution or put the situation to rest for good.
